Tired of Legs That Ache, Swell, or Feel Heavy by Day's End?

You are not alone. Many people in London, Ontario, spend their days standing on a hospital floor, working on a retail or construction site, sitting at a desk, or commuting long distances, and by evening, their legs tell the story. That heavy, tight, swollen feeling is not something you simply have to live with.

Compression stockings, when properly fitted to your body and matched to your daily routine, may help reduce swelling, ease that familiar leg heaviness, and support your circulation in a meaningful way throughout the day.

At Tandem Physiotherapy & Wellness in London, we go beyond handing you a product. We listen first. We learn what your day actually looks like, your work schedule, your travel plans, any medical guidance you have already received, and then we build a personalized plan around you.

Whether your legs have been bothering you for weeks or years, this is where a thoughtful, measured compression stocking fitting begins.

What Our Clients Say

What Are Compression Stockings and How Do They Work?

Compression stockings are graduated elastic garments worn on the legs that apply controlled, gentle pressure, firmest at the ankle and gradually decreasing as they move up the limb. This graduated design can support blood flow back toward the heart and may help reduce the fluid pooling that causes swelling and that familiar heavy-leg feeling.

Unlike the support socks you might pick up at a pharmacy, medical-grade compression is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and comes in a range of levels. Getting the compression level right matters; too little may feel less effective, while too much or a poor fit can cause discomfort, rolling, or skin irritation.

Garment style also plays a role in your results. Knee-high stockings are common for lower-leg and ankle swelling. Thigh-high styles or pantyhose may be considered when symptoms extend further up the leg. Open- or closed-toe options, fabric thickness, and material all factor into a comfortable, functional fit you can wear for hours.

Compression stockings may help people experiencing:

  • Aching or heavy legs after standing or sitting for long periods
  • Ankle or foot swelling (edema) that worsens through the day
  • Visible varicose or spider veins with associated discomfort
  • Post-surgical swelling management (as directed by your physician or surgeon)
  • Leg cramps or restlessness after extended sitting or standing
  • Lymphatic swelling as part of a broader management plan
  • Leg heaviness or swelling during pregnancy or postpartum recovery
  • Circulation support during long travel, flights, or commutes

How Our Compression Stocking Fitting Process Works

Many people come to us after trying compression socks that rolled down, pinched, or simply did not seem to do anything. The reason is almost always fit, or an incomplete plan. Our approach is built around understanding you first, then measuring, selecting, and educating so that your compression stockings can work well for your life.

Step 1: Your Assessment

We begin by listening. We want to know what you are noticing, where the swelling builds, what your workday looks like, any travel or surgery coming up, and whether your physician has already provided guidance or a prescription. We also review relevant health history, because for some people, physician clearance is an important step before compression therapy is appropriate.

Step 2: Measurements, Selection & Education

We take precise measurements, typically ankle circumference, calf circumference, leg length, and sometimes thigh, and use those to guide your garment selection. A typical appointment lasts about 30-45 minutes and includes discussion of:

  • Compression level (mmHg) matched to your symptoms and any medical recommendations
  • Garment style: knee-high, thigh-high, or pantyhose
  • Toe style and fabric options for comfort and daily wearability
  • How to put them on and take them off (including donning aids if helpful)
  • When and how long to wear them across workdays, travel, and rest days
  • Skin checks, care instructions, and what sensations to watch for

Step 3: Follow-Up & Plan Refinement

Most people benefit from a short follow-up once they have worn the stockings in real life for a few days. We check for fit concerns, slipping, pinching, pressure bands, and refine the plan as needed. If your swelling pattern or activity changes over time, we can re-measure and adjust your compression plan.

Who May Benefit from Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings in London, Ontario may support a wide range of people, from those managing ongoing venous concerns to those simply looking for more comfort through a long working day.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to explore whether compression is right for you. If your legs feel tired, heavy, or swollen by the end of the day, that alone is a reason to have a conversation.

  • Aching, heavy, or fatigued legs after standing or walking
  • Ankle or foot swelling that builds through the day
  • Varicose or spider veins with associated discomfort
  • Post-surgical swelling management (as advised by your care team)
  • Leg heaviness or swelling during pregnancy or postpartum
  • Long-haul travel or flight-related circulation concerns
  • Lymphatic swelling or lymphedema as part of a broader plan
  • Leg cramps or restlessness after prolonged sitting or standing
  • Skin sensitivity or irritation from poorly fitted off-the-shelf compression
  • Long shifts in healthcare, hospitality, retail, or trades

If you have significant swelling, a history of blood clots, or known vascular concerns, physician clearance may be an important first step. We will let you know if that applies to you.

Compression is not one-size-fits-all, and the right fit, level, and garment style can make a meaningful difference in comfort and day-to-day experience. A short fitting appointment can help you understand which options may be most appropriate for your situation.

How Can the Right Compression Stockings Help Your Legs?

Compression stocking therapy may offer benefits that go well beyond just reducing visible swelling. With the right fit, the right compression level, and a plan built around your routine, many people report meaningful improvements in how their legs feel through the day, and how they feel at the end of it.

Compression Stockings London, Ontario FAQs

Compression stockings are snug, graduated garments that apply the most pressure at the ankle and gradually less as they move up the leg. This design can support blood flow back toward the heart and may help reduce fluid pooling that causes swelling and leg heaviness. Fit, compression level, and garment style all influence how well they may work for you.

Not always. It depends on the compression level and your insurance plan. Higher compression levels, often above 20 mmHg, commonly require a physician prescription for insurance coverage. If you already have one, bring it to your fitting. If you are unsure, we can explain what information to request from your doctor.

The right compression level depends on your symptoms, daily activity, and any medical guidance you have received. Lower levels may be used for tired legs and travel, while higher levels are often reserved for specific medical conditions. If you have significant swelling or vascular concerns, physician direction is important. We will walk you through the available options at your fitting.

During your appointment, we review your symptoms, daily routines, and any medical instructions or prescriptions. We then take precise measurements- ankle, calf, and leg length at minimum- and help you select the right garment style, size, and compression range. We also teach you how to put them on, how long to wear them, and how to care for them.

Coverage varies by insurer and plan. Many plans consider higher compression levels eligible with a physician's prescription and specific documentation. We offer direct billing where available and can provide itemized receipts to support your claim. Contact your insurer ahead of your appointment to confirm coverage and any paperwork they require.
