A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario is responsible for assessing and treating cognitive, emotional, or behavioural disturbances through a therapeutic relationship. They use talk-based therapy and other evidence-based modalities to help clients achieve positive changes in their thinking, feeling, and social functioning.
- Professional Regulation: Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
- Safe and Effective Use of Self (SEUS): A core requirement where the therapist uses their own self-reflection and professional presence as a primary tool in the therapeutic process.
- Communication: Mastery of active listening, empathy, and the ability to explain complex theoretical concepts in understandable terms.
- Ethical Judgement: Applying ethical decision-making to maintain professional boundaries and ensure client safety.
